Just The Basics

If you have ever had a puppy or a dog that’s just a little too smart for their own good, then you know how important it is to have a quality, well built crate for the times that you need it. Crates can be made of a variety of materials, from wire and metal to plastics. Choosing the right crate for your dog is extremely important for their safety.

Crates create a safe space for your canine companion. A proper crate creates a space that is comfortable, comforting, and place that they know is theirs. During things like thunder storms or fire works, my dog Helena prefers to snuggle under the covers on the bed- but Star will usually go into her crate, because she knows that she is safe there and is comfortable there.

On top of being a safe space for your pet, a proper crate can also help to ensure your friend doesn’t get into anything they shouldn’t while you are gone! This is a serious concern with Star, being a young Labrador Retriever puppy, as they are known to eat pretty much anything they can get their little paws on (and believe me, she tries!). If you need to leave the house and can not watch your companions for a little while, a crate is a great option. Obviously, if you will be gone for long periods of time, a crate is NOT recommended, and either a daycare facility or bringing your pet with you or to a friend’s house would be much better options. A crate will ensure your pet does not create too much havoc while you are away!

The crate that I personally use is a typical wire style crate with a plastic bottom. Star unfortunately is not allowed to keep her bed in her crate anymore when I am away, as she has a nasty tendency to tear apart pretty much anything she can, which is obviously not good! Star does very well in this crate, but has managed to escape once from it. This was solved by using carabiner clips where the latches are, and there is even a space made specifically for them on the crate itself, making the addition even easier. The crate is pretty well made, but I have certainly known some dogs to escape by bending the wire and even chewing on the wire and damaging or even losing teeth in the process.

Tomorrow we will talk about the “indestructible” and “heavy duty” crates. These are great for those dogs that are just true escape artists!
