The Art of the Escape

“You think this thing can hold me back?!”

Some dogs just can NOT be held back! Anyone who has ever had a very determined German Shepherd or Australian Shepherd can tell you that sometimes a normal crate just won’t cut it!

In the cases where you can absolutely not keep them held in a normal crate, I would recommend an “indestructible crate” or heavy duty crate. These can certainly be pricey, but are well worth it if you are buying a new crate every other week, or paying vet bills because your pet ruined his or her teeth on the crate.

My brother has a large dog, probably about 80 lb, that somehow would ALWAYS get out of the wire crates, even when locking with carabiner clips and heavy duty zip-ties to ensure the crate wouldn’t bend. He would come home and Jack would be waiting for him with cuts all over his face and a destroyed crate. This wasn’t good for Jack, as he had accidentally hurt himself, or for my brother! Since switching to a heavy duty crate he has not had an issue with any breakouts! I’m sure he would recommend this product to anyone else with a similar issue! Oh, and some of them even come on wheels for easy moving (they can be pretty heavy!), but I would recommend removing the wheels once you know where you want to put the crate, as keeping the wheels on may allow the crate to move with your pet in it!

The indestructible crates typically come with heavy duty latches and locks, as well as reinforced bars instead of thin wire. These crates can be a little pricey, but again, may be worth it in the long run. They can also be a little bulky compared to some smaller crates, so choose a good area where you will not need to move it much.

Pros:

  • VERY strong and secure

  • Easy to clean

  • Removable floor panel

  • Heavy duty locks and bolts

  • Wheels for easy moving if needed

  • Quality material will last a very long time

Cons:

  • Can be a little pricey, but worth the cost

  • Can be a little bulky due to how secure it is made (not a bad thing, just a little larger than most crates)

Verdict: 8/10

Would recommend to anyone with a little (or big!) escape artist.
